Christina Waterson’s creative practice engages with art, design, and architecture. These are explored as processes rather than disciplines, without regard for their edges or limits. Natural structures and geometries that stem from the qualities and properties of materials, inspire Waterson’s projects. Waterson aims to create versatile objects of sustainable beauty as well as meaningful places of experience that engage the imagination and challenge the individual.

Waterson completed a Bachelor of Design Studies in 1996 and a Bachelor of Architecture in 2005 at The University of Queensland, having also studied Visual Arts at The Queensland University of Technology. Waterson’s experience includes an impressive array of artistic, design and architectural roles for a number of organizations.Her skills at visualising and creating meaningful environments were honed while working with Urban Art Projects and Cox Rayner Architects. Waterson has worked extensively as an exhibition designer for institutions including The Queensland Art Gallery and The Museum of Brisbane. Waterson maintains a vibrant creative practice making artworks and installations, realising public art projects, developing designs for manufacture as well as lecturing and tutoring at the University of Technology.

Waterson received an Arts Queensland Sector Project Grant in 2008 to develop a series of sculptural screens, and became a short-listed finalist in the prestigious 2008 Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award for this series. She was recently awarded the 2009 Creative Sparks Grant by the Brisbane City Council and Arts Queensland. In 2009 Design Quarterly magazine named Waterson in their ‘Top Ten Forces and Faces in Australian and New Zealand Design’. Waterson’s innovative and versatile approach to making art, products, exhibitions, and architecture distinguishes her as a future luminary.
